Access Sciences’ CEO Steve Erickson

Access Sciences’ CEO Steve Erickson

What is your vision for Access Sciences?

To be recognized globally for our ability to help clients extract the most value from their information.

How is Access Sciences looking to evolve so that the company continues to compete effectively?

We continuously look for new and better ways to help our clients manage and use their information. We study information trends and technologies as they emerge, and evaluate the application of those tools and practices for extracting value from information. We’ll change as the market demands, and continue to be on the forefront of applying those new approaches and technologies.

Does digital transformation play a role?

Certainly. As digital technology continues to become integrated into all areas of business, it’s more important than ever to be in control of the underlying information that drives it. On top of that, we need to recognize that digital transformation is more than just an evolution in technology; it requires a change in how we look at our business processes. The status quo will be challenged, and good change management practices must be employed as the technology changes.

How do you see the company changing in two years, and how do you see yourself creating that change?

We will continue to grow by listening to our clients, paying attention to the market, and understanding what the business needs are. In the same way we enable clients to make smarter, information-driven decisions, we will as well.

How do you learn about the market and the economy?

There is no one way to do it; there are many different angles to studying the market. I keep a pulse on the trends by reading the news, listening to panels from key thought leaders, talking to clients, and really just asking open ended questions. I also don’t just listen to what people believe they need because sometimes there is value to be achieved in ways they haven’t thought about. It’s up to us to use our experience and our imaginations. There are many potential new ways to create value and we explore those with clients.

How do you approach change within the organization?

In all of our engagements, change management is an important component. We use the ADKAR® model of change management and apply the same methodology internally. It starts with making sure employees are made aware of the need for change. We discuss and share very openly. We then develop a consensus about the need for desired changes. We leverage our employees’ knowledge and supplement it with any additional knowledge gathering about the needed changes. We then make sure we have the skills and ability to effect the change. Most importantly, we continuously monitor the benefits of change and communicate those benefits to reinforce and sustain it.

Let’s switch gears a bit. If you could describe yourself in one word, what would it be?

Right now, I’m very enthusiastic – I’m excited about the prospect of delivering new value to clients, fostering a growth environment for the employees at Access Sciences, and continuously facing and solving challenges.

Did you think you would be CEO when you started?

When I started, I was ready to do whatever it took to support the growth and success of Access Sciences. Over my time here, I took on a lot of different responsibilities that exposed me to all aspects of what we do – from client service delivery to administration. That exposure has helped me in my current role as President and CEO.

What legacy do you want to leave with Access Sciences?

When it’s my turn to step down, I want to make sure Access Sciences is on a solid foundation of principled operation, willing to take bold new steps to foster continuous growth, be confident of our ability to add value, and be a place employees enjoy coming to work.

People always want to know what books CEOs read and find valuable. Do you have a favorite book?

My all-time favorite book is called West with the Night by Beryl Markham. Based on a true story, she was the first female pilot in Africa and also the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic from east to west. The book is very well written with lively language and is truly a pleasure to read. Personally, it was inspiring to me to read about her journey of personal growth, the challenges she overcame, and the successes she achieved.
