As companies grapple with the recent economic changes, I’ve noticed a definite shift in how projects are being resourced. Gone are the days of full time team members and dedicated resources. Today’s project managers are faced with relying more heavily on part-time team members. But this new reality doesn’t have to be a bad situation.
Let’s face it, part-time teams are normal! People are much better at working part-time on several projects than we were years ago. It also helps that collaboration tools are better now too.
Consider a small project that would have been done by four full time people. Nowadays it might be more realistic to have 1 or 2 full time people and up to ten part-timers. If you choose your team members wisely, you’ll have access to more experts and more brains will yield better ideas. If you’ve selected people from around the organization you’ve automatically increased your organizational reach and perspective. Finally, when your project hits a slow time, you won’t have to worry about keeping a full time team busy. Your part-timers will be more than happy to take a break and focus more time on their regular job.
To learn more about successfully managing part-time team members, I invite you to have a listen to a webinar that my colleague Andree Bourgeois and I recently completed.
